The Family Sponsorship Program
The Family Sponsorship Program enables Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents to sponsor relatives who wish to immigrate to Canada. While not everyone is eligible to sponsor relatives, adding any relatives you have in Canada to your immigration profile will be worth extra points on your profile.
The program is open to anyone 18 or older, and they can sponsor the following family members:
- Spouses or common-law partners
- Child dependents (adopted children are included in this category)
- In some cases: parents and grandparents can stay in Canada up to 2 years.
The duration of the process is not equal to all – it varies based on the relationship between the sponsor and the candidates.
Spouses, common law partners and dependent children go through a process that takes up to 63 days. Parents and grandparents have a longer process that can take up to 4 years.
Adopted children, children who are up for adoption, orphans and other family classes can be processed with a special Priority.
